I read that one should change bulbs every 6-8 months because the growth of corals might be limited otherwise. Does this refer to white or actinic lights or both? And why do people say that nuisance algae growth can increase when bulbs are getting old? Secondly, do you have any good ideas as to what to do with the old bulbs? (can you sell these? after all they still work, just are not good enough for a reef tank anymore... )

I was told by many to change at 6 months. Some manufacturers say their bulbs last 1 year. As usual different answers. I change mine every 6 months. Both MH and PC to be safe. But I don't like twice a year for new bulbs.

I compromise...and change the bulbs after 8-10 months. I year is too long...the light gets noticeably yellower, and there may be increases in hair algae. I hold on to the old bulbs in case of emergency....like when I dropped a bulb last week. An old bulb is better than no bulb...........
