I have had a Eheim 2215 canister filter on a 75 fowler for about 5 years. The tank has lots of live rock, live sand, two koralia power heads for flow and a Remora C Pro HOB protein skimmer. Live stock is a Yellow Tang, Magnificant Fox Face, a star fish and 2 mated coral banded shrimp.

I lost power during Irene for five days and was limited on what I could power with a starting from day two. I kept the canister filter turned off out of fear of die off inside the canister killing my tank. Now about a month later I'm finally getting around to playing with the filter and it REEEAAAAKKKKKS.

1) Can I uses the existing media by rinsing it, replacing filter floss and running it on a spare tank to flush it??? If yes, what should I watch out for???

2) If I replace all media, clean the canister and start from scratch how will this affect the tanks established biological system???

3) Any recommendation on media to use inside and what ratio to use???

4) Do I need to use a canister filter or does my existing system sufficient???

Thank you for your time.

I would ditch the canister filter. They tend to become nitrate factories. If you haven't turned it on since Irene it's a safe bet that your live rock can support all the biological filtration you require.

The only thing you might consider is getting a larger skimmer.
