Rinsing Phosban

Whats the usual way to rinse phosban? I've read dip the bag through a few containers of RO/DI water then open the bag and put it in the reactor, and I've also read to put it in the reactor first then run either a few gallons of RO/DI water or saltwater during a water change until it runs clear. Are either of these methods good or is there a better way?

Mike, I did it both ways before. I prefer the latter. I use ROWA now, and the instruction saids it doesnt need to be rinsed before use. I rinse mine anyway, because it will make your water brown if you dont.

I dump mines right into the reactor and then let it rinse in my filter sock with no ill affects... But then again water quality plays a big role in a half way care free system..

I rinse it in rodi water in a small tupperware container until it rinses clear, load the reactor, fill with SW and turn it on. I then drain it into a small pail again until I'm sure it's clear and then stick the output line back into the sump.
Someday I hope to get the top back on in the correct orientation before the 3rd try..:tired:

Rowaphos is far from "way better".

Per measured unit, it will remove about twice as much phosphate than Phosban, but then again it costs about twice as much. That is pretty even, with an edge to Rowaphos due to the fact that you can go longer without replacing it, which is somewhat counterbalanced by the fact that if it is allowed to dry out it looses some of it's capacity to the extent that some studies have shown it has the same capacity as Phosban.

I also find that it is "dirtier" than most any other GFO out there. (i.e. takes longer to rinse it out).

Either way, after testing Phosban, Rowa and Phosar, I use Phosar as it removes the most phosphate per dollar spent. I haven't tested the GFO from Bulkreef Supply, but based upon cost I would think that it is a good alternative as well.
