Neither. Both gallons and time are useless measures for determining when to replace RO/DI filter cartridges as the quality of your source water will affect the life of your filter cartridges. The way to determine when it is time to replace the cartridges is with a TDS Meter (Total Dissolved Solids). The permeate water (good, usable water) that comes from your properly maintained RO/DI should be zero TDS. As soon as your TDS creeps up to even 1 ppm you should replace your sediment and carbon pre-filters. We like to use color changing DI Resin to alert us when it is exhausted and needing replenishing. As for the RO Membrane, in a well maintained system it should last a good couple of years.
