Sand covered by a brown mat.

Hi All

I've encountered a problem with the sand covered with a brown mat. It's so quick to come back just after I've stirred the sand about half an hour. Does anyone know what it is? Is it a diatom? Everything is fine in my tank and also the water parametre. Is it related to the dissolve organic carbon as I fed frozen brine shrimp and also the live baby brine shrimp.

not an algae, it's a bacteria. How old is your tank?

I had it with my nitrates,silicates undetectable and a phos reading of only.04..the only thing that has worked for me is ....Special Blend

My tank is only half an year and the nitrate(using Salifert) is 0ppm and the phosphate(Hanna digital test instrument) is only 0.02. I've little cyanbacteria in some other places but the colour of the mat looks like rusting brown colour not red in colour. By the way, what is Special Blend?

Cyano is a class of bacteria, not all red. Good sticky thread on cyano on the beginner's forum.
