Albert Thiel talks about a brown stringy bacteria, that I believe
I'm experiencing in my tank...

I haven't tested for silicates, but I run a 4 state Ro/DI unit and the TDS meter reads very very low numbers...

I guess I'm trying to figure out if anyone has had this 'bacterial' stringy problem and what exactly is it called?
I do not think it's the cyano algaes, not diatoms....
This stuff is very very stringy, brown, on my sps, xenia, LR, etc...

I'm going to reduce my light cycle times...

Help please...

I agree, sounds like dinoflagellates. They are very pesky to eliminate. I had an outbreak earlier this year that thankfully was isolated to the sandbed, but despite all the obvious husbandry approaches ( WC's, phosban etc.) it just wouldn't go away. Then I changed my Phoenix 14k lamps ( blue is the point here not the brand) for the Ushio 14K ( much whiter) for unrelated reasons and they disappeared completely in less than a week and I haven't seen them since. I don't know if this is commonly the case that they prefer bluer light, and more than likely there are several types of dinoflagellates so who knows how different strains react. If your tank is skewed to the blue side, it might be worth a shot.
