Should you keep filter pads in you sump?

I keep my skimmer in my sump and was wondering if it would be better to elimate mechanical filtration and just allow bulk of solid waste to get caught in prefilter in overflow box (which i clean every couple of days) and allow rest of waste to be taken by skimmer and not just breakdown in pads.

This is just a thought while I was changing my pads

personally i do not like to use any type of mechanical filtration(ie filter pads,filter socks,sponge,etc...), only skimming if u consider that to be.

I just took my sock out. I have seen alot of people not recommend the socks if you don't plan on changing them every 2-3 days. Since i'm not doing that, i'll just let the skimmers do their thang..

How bout some kind of bag holding carbon, or nitrate sponge? Or is this not even necessary

i have a bag of carbon in a high flow area. i rinse it out whenever it gets dirty. i dont think nitrate sponge is needed in a reef tank.
