I'm looking at buying a skimmer for my new 35g reef tank. I dont have a sump yet but plan on making one around X-Mas time. so my question is what kind of skimmer should I buy? and how much does it cost for one that fits a 35g?
thanks

A Prizm costs about $75 mail order. Make sure you call Red Sea to get the 18 blade impeller. It is supposed to quiet it down a lot.

I have been looking on Ebay and they have alot of skimmers that look like they are good for $40, but I dont know anything about skimmers in general, so im a little nervous to buy one yet. if anybody could give me some suggestions on buying one and what to look for that would be great!
THANKS,
Tim

how important is it to have a skimmer right off the bat?
all I have right now in my tank is 3lbs of LR and 14lb of base rock along with a damsel. I plan on adding more to this as time goes on.
I have had it up and running now for 4 weeks.

I have a CPR SR2 in sump skimmer on my 38 gal, it's a venturi driven skimmer. It works better than the DIY pvc skimmer I built. It is easy to clean and take apart. I paid $135 for it from a LFS.

Tim,

I run BakPak skimmers on each of my 30 gallon tanks. It is a HOT skimmer. With your upcoming sump, you will probably be better served with the sump version like fishfarmer mentions.

I have run the Rio 600, Rio 800 and Maxijet 900 as the powerhead. The 600 does not push a lot of water, so I upgraded to the maxijet. The maxijet would not fit into my preskimmer box and I got tired of always having to adjust it. (If you go with the maxijet, make sure you buy the venturi adapter. Premium Aquatics sells them for around $4) I am now running Rio 800s on both skimmers.

The BakPaks are adequate for that size tank. You may want to consider a Remora skimmer. While I have no personnal experience with one, I have only heard good things about them.
