My CPR Bak-Pak isn't working correctly (the motor isn't as strong as it used to be even after multiple cleanings) and I am now looking at other skimmer options since many have told me the Bak-Pak isn't the greatest skimmer to use. I have a deep 45 gallon FOWLR. any suggestions?

also, does having a deep tank create problems when maintaining clean water? my filter intake (eheim 2213) reaches only about halfway down the tank.

thank you in advance for any advice!!!

The dirt in your water comes from detritus (waste) which should be siphoned out when cleaning the tank, and from broken down waste & proteins in the water. These collect at the surface and make that film that collects. A protein skimmer should "skim" the surface as much as possible to filter out the stuff that collects at the surface. Reef ready tanks are great at this because the overflow effectively skims the surface water so that your skimmer can filter it.

In a non reef ready tank such as yours the remora or remora pro isn't bad. Those are made by Aqua C and you can usually get a good deal on a used one. They don't have any moving parts so getting a used one is no big deal. The only thing that can go bad is a $15 pump that runs it. The remora is a hang on skimmer like the bak pak.

Because the quality of the skimmate produced is lower in nutrients than from other skimmer designs. Translation it pulls fractionally less cr@p from the water than most other skimmers.

Remora or remora pro are good hang on skimmers as fritz suggested above.
