Slate

Is there any reason why i cant use slate in my dt possible leaching heavy metals if anyone has any insight pleas lmk

Hmmm.... I know our tanks used to have slate bottoms....

Man, I don't know.
I know when I was young, our tanks had slate bottoms.
Back then we were only keeping fresh water fish.....
I just don't know....

i think slate and regular rock is loaded with silicates, reef rock is coral skeleton. you will most likely have phosphate problems.

You can use slate or even clay bricks. I have used both many times for many years.

I would like to glue some corals that are currently on my sand bed to a piece of slate because its thin then bury the slate under the sand so my wrasse cant flip them over what a pia as for silicates or phosphate i dont think that would cause an issue i have over 300 gal total volume currently running uln as for old tanks with slate bottoms thats going way back they used to metal frames as well in those days i dont think sw hobbyists had the same success as we do today the hobby has come a long way thanks for the feedback

Slate will be fine and will not leach much of anything if thoroughly cleaned. I use oyster shells that I collect from Point Lookout on beach days.
