As reef keepers we use a lot of electricity. Most power comes from coal, plus the mining equipment runs on diesel and so do the trains that transport the coal . Coal and diesel pollute the atmosphere as well as the land and it eventually winds up in the water contributing to the destruction of the reefs that many of us want to save.
I have been looking into solar for several years, the problem is for my needs, I would have to purchase a $50,000 system. The interest alone (at 7.5%) would be over $300 a month and I just couldn’t afford it. That’s not even counting replacing the inverter every 10 - 15 years for another several thousand.
While researching again a few months ago I found a site that offers you solar power at no upfront investment. Basically they put panels on your roof and you only pay for the electricity that the panels produce. The service isn’t yet available here in Washington County but when I do get my system it will cost me around $100 month (same price I pay now for ‘dirty’ electricity) and the rate per kilowatt is locked in for 25 years so in years to come, when others are paying, say $.30 per kilowatt , I will be paying around $.10.
Check it out at www.affordsolar.com. It’s a great way to fight global warming, pollution, and our dependence on foreign oil while saving yourself money.
