One individual that merits lots of credits is Romulo Purgatorio (Meme), a fisherfolk from Bolinao, who is one of the best of his kind. He was part of the Haribon/OVI team for years. He has trained hundreds of fish collectors to use nets instead of cyanide not only in the Philippines but abroad.

Is there a way to be in touch with Romulo Purgatorio?

Fly to Tonga if you want to talk to him. His "employer" isn't allowing him the use of the internet or phone any longer from what has been told to me. His passport isn't in his hands either, if you catch my drift.

PM Steve (Clarionreef) he's the one in the most contact with Meme :D

MeMe will be working here in Papua new Guinea soon enough and if he can escape from Tonga sooner, he'll be here sooner... then er...later.

Hes become indespensible to his employer in Tonga but his calling is here with our training team in New Guinea, the final frontier. Its about time he earned a nice salary for his 25 years of net collecting and service to others in the cause.

Another super net fisher/diver and trainer, Jose Genoso will work with him as well. Jose quit cyanide fishing in 1982 with MeMe and has been stuck on nets ever since as well.
We will be training Papuan net trainers as well as fish collectors in the meantime and use just two Philippine expats in the training project here which will go on for 3 years.

New Guinea will feature net training and handling training done right from the very beginning.
That will then serve as a basis for subsequent projects such as monitoring, verifying and making paper trails to go with actual fish supply.

Putting the horse before the cart is a novel approach and one that will allow all the other activities to be "pulled along."

If you want to see it done properly as theorized Jade, here is the frontline....or the proverbial line in the sand to serve as a firewall against the trades darker side.
Sincerely, Steve
