Southdown sand is aragonite sand of a very fine particulate size. A good analogy is comparing common beach sand to granulated sugar and southdown to powdered sugar. As I said, it is aragonite, which means it is made up of calcium carbonate (or something like that) versus being made of silica. The hum over southdown is that it is an inexpensive alternative to carib sea aragonite since it retails for between $3 and $5 dollars. If you do a search on southdown you'll find numerous posts on it, including a couple that are very informative. Also, look up DSB or deep sand bed and you'll get a lot of references to southdown sand.
