I have a 24 gallon jbj deluxe cube. The tank is about a month old and doesn't have any fish. Just 6 hermits, 6 snails, a sally light foot, a cleaner shrimp, a few mushrooms and a recently added xenia. The problem is my subtrate is starting to turn brown in certain places. I had a sleeper gobie in it a week or so ago but it cleaned up the subtrate so fast and effectively that it was starving to death, so I returned him. I was wondering if anyone had any recomendation for keeping the substrate clean. Perhaps a fish or invertibrate of some sort. Maybe I need to add more hermits and snails?

Temperature 78 degrees F
Specific gravity 1.022
Ph 8.2
Nitrites 0
Nitrates about 20 ppm

The substrate is aragonite
I do about 10% water changes once a week

The brown stuff is probably diatoms which is normal for a new system like yours. It should die back pretty soon. Are you using purified water (ie. RO, RO/DI, etc.) for evaporation topoff and water changes?
