If you have a sump, here's what you do:

First take a piece of hose and attach a filter sock or some kind of filter pad that's "bag like" to the bottom end.

Once you start the siphon but that end into the sump and start siphoning, all the dirt will get stuck in the sock and the water will remain in the tank.

You could even use one of your own socks, i used one of mine and it seemed to work the best :D.

Kleen sweep is a versatile, efficient and trouble free cleaning tool that removes unsightly waste material from the surface of your aquarium gravel. It is designed for simple convenient operation, your hands stay dry, comfortable hold, and there are no batteries to wear out.

Instructions:
Extend tube so that entire bag is just beneath water surface. Attach a length of airline tubing from your air pump to the fitting at the top of the device. Hold Kleen Sweep as shown and move the intake nozzle very slowly. Locate "pockets"of wast materials first. For best results gently agitate gravel as you go.
