sump placement

we want to set up a 75 gallon tank in a wall in our home. we have the structural issues worked out, so to make this a simplified question, do we HAVE to place the sump UNDER the tank? obviously if it is gravity fed it must be lower than the tank, but can it be to the side of it, or does there have to be a specific amount of gravitational flow? we may not have enough space to fit the sump lower than the bottom the tank. any advice?

You can place it anywhere you'd like as long as it is lower than the main tank..You have to think about the pump... Back pressure and gph..How much flow you'd like....Closed loop...etc....
