Sump socks

So I wanted to ask people and see who runs their system how. Does anyone NOT use socks in their sump and just rely on the skimmer and the cheato in the Refugium?

i use all 3.
socks clog in 3-4 days, macro is growing and skimmer pulls a lot of gunk.
so their all contributing to clean water.

i see cause im running my tank right now with out the socks but i think its backfiring i have crazy ditritus build up and hair alge hair build up

Chaeto doesnt grow for me in one tank, might be the lights too weak, but skimmer brews coffee all week and 3 socks clog up simultaneoously every 4 days. I have another tank that grows 2 different red algae no skimmer just carbon and GFO and water changes weekly.

i started using socks and noticed that i was starting to get cyano maybe i was not changing it frequently enough i figured that one every 2to3 weeks was good enough ( i guess i was wrong)so i decided to dump the sock experiment and sure enough the cyano is receding so i decided that since i was not using them i had no problems with algae i went back to my old system

i see i think that i have let my tank go i bought new sand and will be replacing it this weekend, if anyone wants my old sand you are more than welcome to come get it.
