sump water level?

i have this sump i got from dvs1 (phil) and its 20"Lx9"Wx16"H.anyway he has water level marked on it.so my question is how much water would have to go in the sump before i fire it up? i have experimented with it using to fluval houses (one was not enough,two worked good)even though i had to adjust the flow.but what i noticed is the water level in the tank drop and hold steady.i dont know if i should add water to the sump to bring up the tank level?its kind of confusing i never was good at math lol.thanks

that water line is probably the line at which he kept the water . once u turn the pump on, water will fill the pipes and the levl will drop, u'll have to add more water

Just to clarify, your tank water level should never drop. The sump will. Once the pipes and everything are full, determine where the sump fills to. Then add water to get it to where you want it.

And then generally you want the water level in your sump a certain height for your skimmer to skim best... and that height is determined by the type of skimmer... assuming in sump skimmer

- The level of water in your sump should be enough to where backflow will not lead to a flood.
- The level of water in your tank moving up and down is due to your flow rate, increase/decrease and you'll eventually level off.
- Markings should be placed on the sump to indicate water level to keep you inform as to the level of evaporation.
