I am going to be upgrading my 29g to a 40 breeder in a couple weeks and am looking for any advice everyone may have. I am moving over my LR and a bit of livestock, but most live stock will be gone bf the switch. What is the best way to ensure there is no cycling of the tank. I also dont know whether i can disturb my live sand and move it over. Anyone have any tips?

Why is most of the livestock going to be gone? Selling it?

Anyway, after doing wayyyyy too many tank upgrades/moves. I found the best way is basically to take most of the used water and pump it into the new tank and then proceed to put in the new water. A week after... do a water change.

Your LR should be fine. Just keep it in a bucket with a powerhead for the time it takes to move you water and sand.

More importantly is the transfer of sand. Will you be buying more sand to add on top? If you do you have to ensure that it's live sand/completely dry sand with nothing dead in it.

I have ALWAYs moved my sand over from my numerous upgrades. Basically what I did was scoop up the sand with a cup and put all of it (except like the bottom most layer) into the new tank with my established water already there. I then proceeded to put new sand on top of it. Then I mixed it up really lightly and slowly literally just waving my hand around.

Yes, most coral will be sold before move. I was going to get some more live sand bf the upgrade. Should i get some from an established tank or the dry stuff from the store? And dont take all the sand from my tank? Leave the bottom layer?

upgraded twice and did the same thing twice. no cycle.

Empty out your old tank into a containment unit. Run a heater in there. Reuse 75% of your water and all your live rocks. Buy either live sand or dry sand and use it. Don't reuse your old sand. Move everything back in and add the remaining water with fresh mixed salt water. It's pretty simple really.

Some people reuse their old sand but I don't want to stir up the sand bed and release all the nasty stuff in it.
