Favia and Favites are one of the most popular and well-known LPS corals in our hobby! Their recognizable and distinct features make them easy to spot and differentiate from other corals. Most of these vibrant LPS corals originate from Australia, Indonesia, and Fiji!

They are often known for their extremely colorful, vibrant, large eye polyps. They can be difficult to tell apart, however, the main difference is their skeletal walls. Each Favia eye is completely surrounded by a skeletal wall (except new growth), making a distinct separation between each individual polyp.

In Favites, you'll see the absence of thick skeletal walls separating each individual polyp. With each eye sharing a border with surrounding ones, or blending together as it encrusts outward.

Both of these corals are typically hardier comparatively to other LPS corals. They benefit from moderate light and flow, but can be slowly acclimated to fit a wide range of spectrums. Additionally with placement, they can put out sweeper tentacles. So try and give them plenty of space in your reef! Favia and Favites corals make great additions to a reef tank! Their wide diversity provide endless possibilities with color combos.
