Ive been having this issue lately with my Mag levels.

I was using the cheap instant ocean salt and my levels were:

ALK 8
CAL 480
MAG 1650-1700

I tested this on 2 separate Salfiert testers and a red sea tester. The levels of freshly mixed salt water matched this.

So i figured it was a bad batch of cheap salt and dumped it. I went and bought Reef Crystals (ive had success with in the past) got home, mixed up a batch and the Mag was still in the 1650-1700 range.

How is this possible? I know Instant Ocean makes both brands, but tons of people use this salt and the mag levels aren't this crazy.

Will this high mag level effect anything? Should I just cave and get ESV? Why is this happening? How can I fix it?

I got the salt in a box. So I dumped it all in a old oceanic salt bucket. Im pretty sure it got all mixed when i was pouring it in.

I didnt test my RODI water... are the mag tests valid with freshwater? I have no idea where this extra 300+ mag is coming from.

few questions:

1) have you benchmarked the Mg test kit with a fellow reefers?
2) Are you seeing a change in your animals behavior?
3) or a drop in growth?
4) or coralaine algae going white?

House

1) Yes. We tested his water and it was in the normal range. then mine was 1700 on all three kits.

2) I have ich and the tank is empty right now for another month. All my mini carpet nems look fine. 1 or 2 corals look a little iffy. but 90% of them are doing fine.

3) I just got LEDs from t5s so I cant tell about growth.

4) I have no coraline. Tanks been up for 6 months too :\
