I'm interested in the overflow cover as well. I made a Durso but in my opinion (the wife told me what my opinion was ) it's still too loud. Do you have a picture of the ghetto cover ? I guess it would help keep the cuc out too.

To Awibrandy, I don't worry about the detritus on the rubber matts. The pods and inverts will have fun with that stuff. There is also enough turbulence to keep it going and worst case scenario I'll use a turkey baster.

I run a glass top so the overflow is covered.

It's also nice to note that I am running the Purple Pin Wheel on my skimmer and it's sooo quiet

hey ted. pull the plug. you will have the quietest tank imaginable.
:funnypost

Glass covers? Does that mean your tank has the glass covers on it? Or did you get glass covers for the overflows?
The noise I get from my tanks is the rushing water sound, and the fans when they occasionally come on.
I really would like to quite these down.;)

You can raise the height of your durso so the overflow is full of water. If the water only falls 1/2" from the tank to the overflow it's going to be much quieter.

Make sure your durso is built correctly.

You can add a ball valve on the overflow line to create some pressure on the line. Depending on the distance from the tank to the sump, the extra pressure could quiet down the water noise.

Make a vent for the air (caught in the overflow line) at the surface of the water of your sump. Less bubbles=less noise.

Go skimmerless, or run your skimmer part time. Like when you're at work and at night when you're not in the room.

Research noise ratings on pumps before you buy them. I bought a Mak4, then fired it up. The screaming noise that came out of the pump made me sell the pump the next day.

Buy different manufactures of pumps. When my tank had 3 Eheim 1262s running at once, I could feel the vibrations across the room. They all ran at exactly the same speed, so they were 'in tune' with each other. Two pumps were more than double the sound of one. Three pumps was a definite hum.

Change out your noisy fans for quiet ones. Again, check the noise rating before you buy. There are (nearly) silent fans. Pay the extra $2.

Best advice? Remote sump in the basement, or behind in another fish room. I never thought a reef tank could be so quiet until I saw a tank with a remote sump.

Haha, I've been trying for years to get my sumps into the basement. Hubby doesn't want hole in the floors or walls.LOL
But I am still trying, and I will conquer this one too.;) I'm almost there! Haven't told him we'll need bigger pumps yet. More $$$.;)
BTW, the noise is the overflows in the tank it self.:( I don't dare mess with the plumbing in there.;) I know I'm a coward(mind you this is from a woman who has torn down walls, electricity to a room where there was none for outlet & ceiling light fixture,as well as an outdoor outlet where there was none, built a 16' X 16' deck with a 100g pond with water fall in it's corner with no help, tore out the kitchen from top to bottom, and redid it with little to no help), but I'm afraid of a flood.:biglaugh:

I am extremely happy with my RedSea Max 250... It is almost silient. a little noise from the fans and slight noise from skimmer but no trickle noises like most tanks. I'm happy with it.
