Union Square Petco

I only go to petco for catfood, and I'm starting to not even go for that. I'd rather support my local pet stores.

I gt all my pet stuff locally, but hey if Petco is gonna sell aquacultured stuff, i thing it is alright to support that. Supply and demand may dictate what they carry. I just make it a point to not look at their fish tanks. I'm gonna take some pics of what they have today and i'll post them. Would be interested to see if anyone can identify good deals.

Yeah, I was there the other day and was shocked to see living ORA frags. Several of my fish came from the Petco in Union Square. (PJ Cardinal, Coral Beauty and Hawkfish) my wife and i saved them from near death, breathing hard and unhealthy. We quarantined, treated them and have had for several years now in a 75g sps dominated aquarium. I don't condone these chain stores that mistreat livestock, due to lack of knowledge and poor management, but it feels good to save critters from near death. With that said, there is one person working in the fish section of that store that seems to be extremely knowledgeable. I wish I could remember his name. A while back those tanks in the back practically smelled like urinals!:irked: It was seriously bad. I mentioned it (i'm sure others did too). The next time i visited the store, they had cleaned the invert setup and added protein skimmers. That was several years ago. The tanks that exist now are even newer additions. As much as i have been turned off by these stores in the past, it is good to see one of them attempting to improve conditions for their livestock.

I am not a huge fan of Petco when it comes to buying anything but cat food or a piece of airline tubing, but I did notice a real improvement in that location (Petco Union Square) in the past couple of months. It looks like their marine part (at least the fish, cannot really judge the corals since they have really bad lighting there) is way better taken care of than before: no/few random sick looking fish, and they even had some stickers "this fish is under observation, it will not be sold yet".

Quite a contrast with the usual skinny fish covered in ich.

Well just go and check for yourself. I am talking about huge improvement, not beating up the old "Petco sucks".

World of pets was selling sick dogs in the 90s I can't imagine what the fish stock is like !!! It has 2 locations I believe

There is no reason to expect anything from Petco fish. Most chain stores like that are not going to have the stability of a LFS.
But, if the fish section is completely screwed then I assume the rest of the store is ignored also. It just is not quite as visible.
I would never buy anything from there unless it was part of a dollar per gallon sale.
