I plan on upgrading my current tank which is 55 gallons to either a 150 or 120 gallon tank. I'm going to need about 65 to 95 gallons of new salt water to transfer everything over (fish and coral). I'm concerned about adding that much new water with the water already established in my tank now, will the water start to cycle like a new tank setup? If so is their any way around this that is not too costly, besides letting the water sit for weeks before adding livestock?

maybe you can do a semi-big water change in your established tank before the upgrade. maybe do a 35% water change or so.. save the 'old' water change water to use for the new tank.

i went from 18 gal to 40 gallon.. used maybe 50% old water, and 50% new. also added new 'live sand from a bag'. no minicycle, everything went without a hitch but YMMV.

i think you should be fine

Its just like doing a big water change on the new tank. If you are transfering everything to the bigger tank and not letting the rock stay out of water for too long you shouldent have any problem. You already have an established biofiltration system in your 55 and that will still do the same job in the 150. Just dont go throwing 6 new fish in at one and you should have absolutly no problems. Water doesnt need to be established but all of your bio media does and you already have it in the 55. Good luck and congrats on the bigger tank.

I just went from a 75 to a 90 and used all new water none of the old at all ...I put all of my live rock in a garbage pail with a heater and powerhead and my old water for about 10 hrs ...Then added my new sand (not live sand) some new water and starting adding my old live rock ...and no problems at all tank has been up and running for a month now.....Just what I did .....I did notice a tiny spike in ammonia for day then all gone....
