I bought 3 ESV MH 10K DE bulbs from ocean encounters about 4 months ago and sold them to a fellow reefer at the last frag swap. The person i sold them to told me about 3 weeks ago that one of the bulbs had die on him and with this xmas frenzy i was not able to contact them until today. He told me that he could not do anything for me because bulbs were too old. My question is if you buy a bulb that should last you i would think at least a year under normal use 6 to 9 hrs a day, what should the company do if a bulb dies so soon. I have never had a bulb die on me in the whole term of me being in this hobby (6 years Now). I have bulbs that i've replaced after 10 to 12 months use still in my house.. I would of thought that they would have at least offered a new bulb at a lower price, but not even that. Oh well, I guess you get what you pay for (cheap Bulb). NO MORE EVC FOR ME  ..........

In either case i will be working something out with the person i sold it to. I don't believe in bad business

Like you stated, I've never had a halide bulb "die" in the 2+ yrs I've used them. Personally, I wouldn't hold a vendor responsible for a bulb which was in use for several months at a different location...I couldn't guarantee to the vendor that the bulb was not in use 24 hours, on an incompatible ballast or mishandled. Did OE say how long their guarantee is for?

Dave I agree with Dean.
I would be upset if a bulb died on me after six months.
However from the sellers standpoint it's tough to back up.
Any number of things can happen, the bulb could be mishandled
in so many ways, there's just no way to know. especially if the bulb was sold to a second party, there is no way I would replace the bulb if I was the seller.
I have three evc bulbs and they have all made it past their due dates, it's time for me to replace them.

ok. your point is well taking. And i do understand both of your point. what bothered me is that he never knew that i resold the buld and still did not make an offer to do something for me. that's what pissed me off. I have no pronlem with what you stated, but what about if i never sold the bulb and was using it on my system... What then.

it's a good question, how long should a bulb be guaranteed for.
I never thought about it, i guess because one never died.

still after 6 months the seller would probably be replacing many bulbs due to accidents, or people wanting to swap an aging bulb for a new one.
it sucks but I'm not sure we can hold the sellers responsible for that long.

In this case i will still do something for the buyer because that is just how i am. that why i hate selling stuff. It's like for example jon when i sold you the calcium reactor and the regulator died on you pretty quick. i still felt responsible for it and made arrangements for you to receive another. I have to believe what our fellow reefers tell me because i would hate to think some could be deceiving to me. sorry for being naive but that's just how i am. Now in other hand if i find out that a person screws me like that like for example (ricordia king Adrian) I can be very difficult.

Dave,
As a reference, Hamilton pro-rates the bulbs from your sales receipt day. So if you bought a bulb a month or 2 in anticipation for a change out and then the bulb dies 6 months later, Hamilton will pro-rate it for 8 months usage and you'll get back credit which amounts to less than shipping.

Rule of thumb is not to stock up on bulbs :lol2: (I know that this is not the situation in your scenerio :) )

4 months? it's a fragile light bulb. I wouldn't back it up either. Hey, I wouldn't back it up after 30 days. If I sold a used bulb it would be 'i's a used bulb. i used it for ___ hours/weeks/months. It worked when it came out of my light." all it takes is a bit of water, a touch on the bulb, or a drop of a light fixture and the bulb is a gonner. I won't be responsible once that bulb leaves my posession- and the bulb would be priced accordingly. I had a ushio 10k in when I dropped my hood 4'. It hit hard enough to break the oak trim but didn't hurt the bulb. I unplugged the light, let it cool off, then fired it back up. I know that when I buy a ushio bulb it's a well-made bulb.

But I buy phoenix bulbs most of the time. I know they're crap. if they last more than 6 months I'm happy. But I know they're cheap-both in price and construction. so if one dies in 5 months, oh well. I got what I paid for.

I aplaud you for backing up the sale, though. if it's a 150w de I have a spare bulb or two you're welcome to.

Thank you for your comments. I guess i'll just be stocking my equiptment from now on when i up grade or give it away. I just hate to think someone paid me some money for something i sold them and that it can go bad in a short period of time and the can feel that i cheated them. in either case i do totally understand what JH,Dean, And you stated. I like to be able to listen to other points of views whether there in my favor or not. I could never get offended for advice....
Thanks to you all.
David
