Talk about a bad luck story. I have two Tunze 6045's running on my tank and the prop blades sheared off one of them when I restarted it after cleaning. WhileI was on the phone with the Tunze rep he suggested I change the good shaft/prop to the other pump to see if it worked thus eliminating the possibility that it was anything to do with the pump itself. So I stick my hand in the tank to take out the second Tunze when I hear a bang like a small explosion. After checking that all body parts where intact. I looked for the problem. I had put my hand next to the return, water ran up my arm hitting the glass covering the Halide which was on. Cold water and hot glass do not mix as you know. It shattered into a million pieces. (This hobby never seems to amaze me.)
So Out of this wacky mishap arises a few questions. What does the lack of UV protection do to tank inhabitants such as fish and sps ,lps and soft corals? I know I have to replace the UV glass but do I have a time frame in which to do it or should I remove that bulb until l I get a new glass? Finally can one get a piece of UV glass from any regular glass shop or is this a case of going back to the Manufacturer?
