I have been hearing diffrent things about uv steralizers.... some say their realli good and some say that its just pointless.... which one is true, and should i put one on my 45gal reef?

I would go with an ozone generator before I would use a uv sterilizer. The ozone will do everything that the UV will do with the added benefit of making the water sparkling clear. The initial cost may be a little higher but you don't have to buy new bulbs every year (or less) like you do with UV. I've never used either but have done lots and lots of research on the subjects. If you do wish to consider ozone then be sure to take the time to research its proper usage.

As for your original question, a UV isn't pointless for a reef tank (they are just about a no-brainer for a fish only setup) but you need to make sure you get a quality make and that it is sized properly (along with the pump) for your setup.
