UV Sterilizer and Hair Algae (spores)

So I've been fighting hair algae for a while and I know that the hair algae that is already anchored cannot be fought using a uv sterilizer but I was wondering if anyone knew that it might help rid the tank of the spores that help generate new hair algae. Also would a uv sterilizer be bad for a reef tank in any way that I should be made aware of?

Are you using tap water or RO/DI???
