Valve on my drain?

Hey guys i just bought a nice tank that has a built in overflow with durso drain behind it. The drain has a valve. I was wondering what this is for. The guy that sold it to me isnt quite sure neither.

What are the benefits of closing this valve some what? Right now i run it all the way open and am having no problems.

Im assuming the valve is at the top. This would be to adjust the air intake, to make it quiet. The different size pumps will need different air intake.

Nah, this valve is a big red one half way down to the sump. All it could do is cut down on the flow from the main display to the sump. Im just wondering why anyone would want to do that.

Maybe its a good feature that i dont know about.

I would fear that valve being half closed and then snail comes along and plugs the rest.

I would say that it would be used to shut off all flow from the DT, ie, if you want to work on the sump and you dont want to wait for the water to drain from the overflow. You can shut that off. But if you leave your return pump on, you WILL flood the tank.

That sounds like a good reason. I though it had to do with noise level or bubbles entering sump. I so get water running through pipe noise but nothing major overall a quiet system. Thanks guys.

I have one on mine as well but that's how the previous owner had it. I don't mess with it at all.

For whatever reason, if you just barely close it a little bit, it usually quiets down the water coming into the sump.

the valve is their to control water flow down into the sump, by closing it you raise the water level in your over flow making it virtually silent. It is very dangerous to do this, anything that goes down and gets stuck at the valve will overflow your tank. leave it wide open or take it out.

Ok its most likley just to adjust the flow also for noise. I put a valve on my drains and close them slightly and they get much quieter.

If you closed it when you turn your return pump off it would prevent air back flowing into your sump.
So when you turn the pump back on you won't inject a large amount of air bubbles back into your DT.
This would be handy when target feeding.
In this case run it wide open and close it only when you shut your return pump off. And open it when you switch it back on.

Thinking about installing one. Really bothers me when I start my return pump and the tank gets flooded with air bubbles.
