vortex or tunze

looking to get a new power head for my new 65 gallon tank. not sure what is a better pump i had tunze and loved them.. but i like the idea of the vortex being outside. of the tank have neve seen them in action. also what is more reliable.. thanx

Both my tunzes crapped out after 2 years. I even got a new impeller for one of them.
I'd never waste my money on them again. I now have 3 vortechs. They have their own set of problems, but imo they work better than the tunzes I owned.

some downfalls
can't adjust direction of flow
outside motor makes some noise
motor is known to fall off.

i have the tunze 6100 and it has been running like a champ for 2 yrs. I really like the new vortechs alot as well. I don't think you can go wrong w/ either

I'd be weary of the peeps on RC selling vortechs that are close to one year old. My dry end started making noise after one year. They wanted me to ship the dry end to them then they would repair it or replace it and send me the working one. They said the warranty on the dry end is only one year.

We worked it out but I wasn't too happy with the one year aspect of the motor.

I like my Vortech, but its by far the loudest thing on my tank (my tank is small). Everything is aligned and set up properly but I still prefer it to the Tunzes I have had due to everything already mentioned here. Customer Service wise, Roger at Tunze is almost reason enough to go with Tunze, but I've never dealt with Ecotech so I cant say anything about them (yet). I think tunze's have a 2 year warranty?

I made the switch from tunze to vortex - glad I did. I love my vortex!!! Also love the extra room I have by keepin the motor outside of the tank

If you can wait a few weeks and you are coming to the swap, you can see them in action, both in real world applications ( I run a total of 6 on my systems) and in demo :shhh:.

The Vortech wet side need parts replacement every 18 months or less due to rusting or normal wear. I think it cost $16-50 depend on the parts you would need (drive shaft, magnet, etc). And if they found your dry side has water damage, it could void your warranty.

They are doing a preview of some new product at the MAX show this weekend.

Out of the above mentioned, I like my closed loop run through an Oceans Motions 4-way the best. My Tunzes have been running for over 4 years and they take up real estate. My Vortechs are loud and kind of ugly hanging off the side panes, but my closed loop .... none of the above

I've been leaning more towards a closed loop lately save for one thing, power outages! Twice in the last year we've lost power for 4 hours or so each time. I'd like something that will keep moving water in the event of an outage.

Battery backup is the way to go then fritzy. keep one of those tunze 6045 and hook it up to one when the lights go out.

I have 3 of the 6045's and after Roger fixed the recall issues the great customer service really made me appreciate the company and pumps even more. I did recenly purchase a vortec though and love it as well. I think when I upgrade to my 120 I am going to do a blend of pumps...
until I can have my closed loop that is.
