I saw on Ebay a hydrometer that showed the below reading - my question is:
exactly where on this scale is 1.025? I know, stupid question, but the scale does not match up with the numbers on the side. So if the arrow points to 1.020, then where is 1.025?

I'm asking this so I can decide what hydrometer to buy - a digital one, a cheap plastic one (like the one that broke on me today) or something in between, like the ones on Ebay that also have specific gravity readings.hydrometer reading copy.jpg

it seems the number readout off was alignment with bar, but I won't bother to find exact reading of 1.025 instead use right side and make sure at 35ppt.

Buy a refractometer, best money you will ever spend. and you can find one of the good ones on one of the aquarium buy sites or ebay for 30-40$. what your looking for is a quality made one and one that shows a crisp line on the reading and the reading is easy to read. Hydrometers are always off (mine read 1.250 and my refractometer read 1.280+) and i had 2 that were both off. One was brand new too and thats the case with all the hydrometers. Digital ones that are worth it and give good readings are usually 2x more expensive than the refractometers.

Get a decent quality refractometer. Look at some different ones at various reefers houses. Some scales are difficult to read even on refractometers. Either way, the worst refractometer is eons better than the best hydrometer (IMO).
