Here's a thought:

Have you considered entering the arena of breeding? This company offers captive bred seahorses and actually sells some for this price! Granted, I'm sure very few. But, in our area, we have 2 breeders. Mine are not for sale at this time (I am filling a tank at our local PA) but our other breeder is selling the 60 of them for $25 bucks each! 60 x 25= 1500! Of course, it might be easer to grow SPS frags, but they grow so slowly! It does take some effort to CB fish, but it is worth it!

At $25 each, it is not a lot of money. People do it for the love of the hobby, it is definitely not for the money.

How much does it cost to rear each of those ponies for sale?

Probably more than $25 if labor is not included. Sorry for the bad pun.

They eat baby brine shrimp. I have a huge can that costs around $12.

They breed every 2 weeks.

Yeah, I'd consider it a great success if you break even once you consider everything you put into it.

I don't know about your SPS, but mine grow like weeds. I make around $300 / mo on frags from my 120g tank. I still consider it great if I break even, and I definitely am not in it for the money. It is nice to be able to say, "Honey, why do you care if I bought this nice coral. You know I'll make it all back anyway."

Good luck. Keep us posted on how it goes. I wish you could make it profitable so less seahorses would be taken from the wild. I live near the coast and used to see them all the time when I was a kid. I haven't seen one in nearly 5 years and I scuba dive and drag my seine in places all the time that should have them. I doubt this loss is due to collection but every bit helps.

I have a friend in our reef club who is selling a clutch of anemone fish. $20 bucks each, $35 a pair. She can't count them all! A pair of clownfish, a culture of rotifers, some algae paste and some patience. Could be profitable?

Well, you forgot all the things that could go wrong. :D

For the record, I have the same exact thing/guy in my reef club. It started as an interested and now he's looking to sell. But I just talked to him about it for a good while at the last meeting - it definitely didn't come without headaches, heartaches, and pocketaches. ;)

There is a lot to take into consideration when we talk about making money breeding or fragging. A little extra pocket money is pretty easy to make, but making the experience profitable is rather difficult. That doesn't mean I don't think people should do it - far from it. :D

After one year my tank pays for its supplies with SPS frags. Not the electricity. It sure does take alot of time away from my family being a salesman in my garage though. Theres a trade off for everything and rarely a "get quick rich scheme" that actually works. I like talking reef with the people that come to my house. So to me its nice to have pocket money and to socialize with people that have the same obsession as myself.
