Yes its the same height as your tank which is 12" tall.
When u say 2-2.5" do u mean across the entire sump or only in the return section.
If its in the entire sump then you'd have to calculate the actual volume. If its only in the retern section and the outlet of the 30g was set at a low enough height than I would have no hesitation of any kind at all.
If it is the same as setting your return section at a specific level so it doesn't overflow. It's also like having your remote fuge except now you'll have a remote return section.
I'd be confident doing it so long as u knew how many gallons you had to compensate for with the pump off and so long as you had enough water volume in the 30 as not to suck in air. U can help that by facing a 90 down.
You'd also have to mod your original return bulkhead a bit with a riser pipe to maintain more water in the old return section. That way less.water would drain into the 30 with the pump off.
