I disagree .I need more people to convince me other wise.Yes watt is watt but amps play a big part as well.400 watts is 400 watts, doesn't matter if its 400W MH 400W T5s or a 400W toaster oven, they all cost the same to run. Odds are you will not need the 400W of T5 vs the MH unless you are looking for strong PAR readings over 24" deep.

400w/120 volts (standard usa juice)= 3.33 amps
both fixtures will run at 3.33 amps. Mh might have a slightly higher startup draw but that should level out as they both run throughout the day.
The above formula is the basic electrical calculation for any of the three potential variables (watt, voltage or amperage). As long as you know two of the three variables, the third can be figured out.
