The UV Sterilizer a hot topic in the hobby. Some say it works some say it doesn't. Everybody has mixed results from "it reduces my diatoms" to "it got rid of my ich." Basically it is a housing that holds inside of a it an ultraviolent lamp. The UV lamp is used to kill any form of free floating bacteria. A pump delivers the water into the housing and in there it goes through sterilization. Corallife is a good brand.

The Phosban reactor is basically a media chamber with a relatively slow flowing feed pump. It's purpose is essentially to... you guessed it... remove phosphates. A popular one that people use is the Two Little Fishes Phosban Reactor 150 (the one you linked).

You bet me too it Antz. Damn MS Word and spell check.

The more seasoned reefers will chime in but a UV sterilizer allows water to flow over an ultra violet light, which in turn kills many types of microscopic organisms and bacteria. Some swear by them others dislike them because they can also kill beneficial bacteria and organisms, such as pods, as well as the bad ones such as marine ich. I personally dislike them.

A phosban reactor flows water over a phosphate removing filter media and in turn removes phosphates in your water thus help to prevent nuisance algae.

U.V. usage is a little more involved. The flow rate of water in respect to the wattage of your unit will determine what exactly you are killing, from free floating algaes to protozoa. Coralife is an ok unit on a smaller tank if you set it up properly. I personally feel the benefits far outweigh the cons of U.V. use. Look at it like an insurance policy for the money you have invested in livestock. It's not a blanket policy but it has good coverage. There's a lot that could be said about U.V. sterilizers but you could easily find a wealth of knowledge with a quick search here or through google.

Phosban reactors are just miniature fluidized sand bed filters or reverse flow filters. It's a chamber where the ferric oxide phosphate removal media resides and water is pumped through from the bottom forcing it to more completely contact the media. It's just a better way to run chemical filtration by forcing contact over the entire media. You get virtually no bypass within the filter.

I do not know much about your set up but I would say No to UV usage in Reef Set up. But instead use Q/T for any new arrivals for duration required to eradicate possible and most commonly occuring Crypt and Amyloodinium since these are Obligate Parasite.
I do know that many free swimming lavae of tank inhabitant may/will be present as tank matures thus UV can knock out such possible FREE additions to your set up.

PO4 Reactors as needed base, IMO. Look into RO/DI before PO4 Reactor.

Reef tanks contain several times the bacterial population of natural seawater which could cause problems under the right circumstances in a small tank. A U.V. will help keep those populations in check among other things. Parasites aren't the only reason to use a U.V.
