The concept is to push water thru a membrane with very small holes so that all the nasty stuff stay on one side and you have (near) pure water on - RO unit usually have prefilters to trap big particles and carbon filters to break down large compounds, then a de-ionization unit after the membrane to remove leftover soluble ions.
