In thinking about the total aspects of reef/fish keeping I am wondering what everyone feeds their fish and corals?

Is there a better brand then others?

Some make their own? How?

I make my own. Hit the sea food market and pick up assorted fish/shell fish/shrimp etc. Make sure all SW species. I throw about 1/3 in a blender and puree for the corals. The rest I throw in and leave in small pieces. Pour the mess on a pan so it is thin then stick in the freezer. Once frozen I break it up in to small pieces then toss it in a zip-loc bag. If I have it on hand I will add Nori, some sort if vitimans or flake food. IMO it is cheaper to do it this way. Just do not buy the packaged stuff because to the preservatives that are added.

Depends on your tnak size and how often you feed and what you are feeding. I have a small tank with only 4 little fish in it so I only get about $2 of a few things and then blend them up. Last time I think I got 8 shrimp 8 scallops and some left over orange roughy fillet. Total cost was only a few bucks.

To be honest I just eyeball things. I try to do approx equal parts of the meat stuff. I think there is a receipe in AA the Eric Boreman wrote, but it is more of a guide. Don't go over board it goes a long way.

Do you add anything else like golden pearls, selcon, etc?

Are there any off the shelf good foods that are low in phosphates, etc?

I do not normally add any thing else. Sometime I get together with some locals and if they have any other stuff we added it. You could check the frozen food section, but be careful. I have used a few before but do not remember the name brand.

My fish are primarily carnivores, so I feed mostly frozen Piscine Energetics mysis (the only frozen mysis I trust) and now I've recently supplemented with Artcipods from Reed. I also feed ON Prime Reef frozen once in a while (Ocean Nutrition makes good products IME). I've used Selcon in the past, but mysis and Artcipods are already high in nutritional value that Selcon is supposed to supplement.

I've tried Golden Pearls. Didn't do much for my tank except dirty up my water. I also tried live phyto (e.g. DT) and came to the same conclusion. I'm now trying Rotifeast from Reed as well.

I used to make my own foods but found it easier (though more expensive) to feed prepackaged fish foods.

Just curious Len, why don't you trust other brands of mysis? What kinds of things should we be aware of when shopping for mysis? Are you looking for phosphate content, nutrition value, or what? TIA
