Backup UPS too much power for pump?

I got an oversized UPS to power a MJ 1200 with the outlet set towards the surface. I figure if we have a power outage it should run for a day or so off of the battery since it's only about 18 watts.

Today I tested the UPS and unplugged it, sure enough the battery took over and continued running the MJ however, the MJ was bouncing around as if all of a sudden the impeller was off balance. This thing was vibrating like crazy! As soon as I plugged the UPS back in, the MJ went back to normal. I imagine that this UPS was designed for much higher a draw then my MJ and it can't ramp down? (I know nothing about electricity)

This got me wondering what others have plugged into their UPS.

Any similar experiences? Should I take my UPS back? Use a different pump?

My UPS is a cyberpower 1285AVR

Most cheaper UPS coverts the stored DC voltage from the internal battery to a modified sine wave AC voltage, it is cheaper to built and typical PC don't know the difference.

To an AC driven pump it means the voltage is a bit "dirty" and that is why your MJ1200 runs a bit "rough". It may wear the pump down quicker if the MJ1200 is running on back up power for extended periods, like months. Make sure the MJ1200 is placed securely on the tank to prevent it from blasting anything you don't want to in a event of it falling down.

The best choice would be hooking up a controllable Tunze to it since the motor in those are DC powered and won't know the difference when you switch the AC to a modified sine wave source.

The VA and watt rating on UPS are pretty much useless. It all depends on the age and condition of the battery, the type of load plugged into it also contribute to the length of time if can supply X amount of watts.

You are better off testing it once a while to ensure the length of time it will run is as planned, periodically discharging the battery completely also ensure the battery can stay in a fully charged state longer.

Question about these UPS.
Wouldn't it be possible to hook up multiple batteries to these units, I notice that most of these have end user replaceable batteries with pos and neg connectors?
