Whats going on with my GFO?

I was doing to checks on the tank and noticed that the GFO appears to have expanded. There used to be space on the top where it was tumbling and now there is no gap and it kind of looks like it swelled up or something? Water is still flowing through it.

What brand gfo did you get? How big is your tank? It looks like you have way too much gfo in there

GFO isn't supposed to tumble. Very little amount movement if any with GFO. Hard to tell in picture but how much you put in. To much pressure will cause gannet to break up. Check for air pockets too.

It needs a small tumble on top or else in bonds together

105g I followed the measurement instructions on BRS. It wasn't like hard tumbling before just turning over a bit.

When I used to run GFO only the top layer would tumble slightly. Hope this helps.

The problem is there is not gap on the top anymore. There used to be like a 1.5" gap between the top of the gfo and top of the canister. It looks like the pellets on top have expanded (see pic).

If They Have ToO Much Flow They Will Grind And The Granules Will Shrink And Float To The Top

It sounds like you have more media than your reactor has too much media. You may need to use less and change more often or upgrade.

+1. Assuming you are running a TLF reactor? If so that is most likely why. I think the brs gfo is meant for there specific reactors. There reactors are ro sized so it can handle more media.

Its a brs dual reactor. It just looks really strange. like the top two inches the granules tripled in size or something.

The top part that has been tumbling is getting ground down to finer particles perhaps

Are you using 2 part? Just wondering if that is causing the GFO to bond together. Looks like the top is starting to cake up and create channels.

No I am not dosing anything. Haven't changed anything in my system.
