I currently have a Deltec MC500 in my sump. I have problems with it. Basically I HATE the collection cup design. If you clean the skimmer, there's no way to set it up exactly what you had before.

So I'm getting a new skimmer, and building a new sump.

The choices I've narrowed it down to are:
DAS EX-1,
or an Octopus DNW-110.

Both are small recirculating skimmers. I'm going to gravity feed whichever one I choose.

Which would you get?

Pros/Cons?

I've heard that pet-o-rama is the only place to get DAS skimmers? Don't know if thats fact. I've also heard they are poorly packed and come broken and replacement parts are hard to find. Again don't know any of that first hand.

I use a Euro-reef RC135 currently, it's recirculating like the DAS EX and although I do get a good amount of skimmate out of it, I wonder sometimes if the flow in the chamber is too chaotic and a skimmer with a diffusion panel would help the dwell time and make a better foam. I dont know, but like I said I get a nice amount of skimmate from it.

If I was picking between the two you mentioned I would get the DAS. I just dont know the pump the octopus uses and also the body is 4.3 instead of 5" with the DAS.

If you get the octupus plan on doing a threadwheel mod. It's simple and fast. It also makes your octopus perform 10x better. I'm serious..

The only issue you'll have is that you'll have to restrict the air flow into the pump or your skimmer will overflow. I just used a valve like the one on my RODI unit on the waste side.

OH.. it DOES make your skimmer a little louder, but it shouldnt be an issue if you're housing it in an closed stand.

I'd be picking up either skimmer locally, so no worries about the shipping problems.

The pumps on the octopus skimmers are re-branded Ocean Runners. Easy to get the pumps and the parts.

A friend has a DAS and said it's hard to find customer support/parts for the skimmer.

I'm probably going with the octopus, or I'll wait till GEO releases his skimmer...
