I would advise not to purchase this fish until you have a lot more tang keeping experience under your belt. They are very prone to disease and require a large tank and exceptionally clean and oxygenated water. The vast majority of them die within a few months of being purchased.

"The tang police, they live inside of my head...
the tang police, they come to me in my bed...
the tang police, they're coming to arrest me...oh no!"

Sorry. What I meant to say was, throw caution to the wind and buy yourself an achilles tang instead. Without knowing anything about your experience or tank size I'm sure it will do wonderfully and definitely not get ich and die in a month.

I kept an A.japonicus for approximately 2 years. He dissapeared while I was out of town for a week last thanksgiving sadly. Gorgeous fish and hardier than A.nigricans - prettier too in my opinion. Quite aggressive though he was definitely top dog in my tank and I am still bummed about losing him.

I don't know many people who have had short or long term success with gold rim / A nigricans to be honest. Scott Michael says that it is the hardier of the two but the experiences of other aquarists has convinced me otherwise.

Hey! How come you didn't give me this advice in my tang thread?

Nickpotts - Have you considered Acanthurus japonicus as an alternative? They are quite similar in appearance, to the point where they are commonly mistaken for one another. They seem to be more successful in a reef tank than nigiricans.

Oh,I didnt see the response on the tank size
You should do research on the tang as Matt has stated,They are not easy to keep. Before you put this fish in you should do a little preventive maintenance for dieases, if you havent already.
The tank is large enough, provided you dont have a lot of large fish in the tank.
Let us know what you deciede, and how it goes

No, no...I wasn't calling you on being cautious. I just think it's funny that whenever someone gives advice on tangs that song pops into my head.

...and not the original verion...I mean Apu singing it in his driveway while washing his camaro. :D

Peace,

Chip
