There are also 6 stage units out there with an extra carbon cartridge. Mine's a 6 stage, but some people think it's overkill. One of the really important things is the gallons per day your membrane is rated for. I have a 100 GPD unit but in my experience I've never gotten better than 60 GPD out of it. That can be due to a lot of factors, chief among them are water pressure and the temperature of the water coming out of the line.
I've got good pressure, so temperature is my issue. I’m lucky to get 30 GPD in the winter when the water is really, really cold. And that’s with brand new cartridges! It's harder to push slow moving, cold water molecules through a membrane. BTW, hot water will ruin your membrane so the feed into the RO/DI unit has to come from the cold main.
Membranes are rather expensive to replace so you should baby it by using cold water, changing your other cartridges regularly (particularly sediment) and periodically back flushing your membrane. Make sure to get an RO/DI unit that has this feature. It will cost a little more, but will quickly pay for itself due to decreased membrane replacement costs.

Do they make a ro/di system that doesn't have to be attached to the tank or a separate plumbing system?
Like one that would be loose and you could just treat a specific amount of water that you need for your daily top off or weekly water change then store it away...
*It would be for use in a 12 gallon nano and a 26 gallon bowfront, small tanks minimal water needs....(not on a budget) :smoker:
