I just noticed that my yellow tang has a missing part on his dorsal fin. Could he have gotten bitten? I have a hippo tang and 2 percula clownfish in the tank with 2 cleaner shrimps and 1 peppermint shrimp. I bought the hippo tang and yellow tang from an MR member in the same tank, so it couldn't have been the hippo. I have no clue who could have done it. They have been feeding very well, so it can't be from starvation. I just happen to have a picture from earlier because I was taking random pictures.

Here it is just now. WTF???? :bigeyes2: :headache: :anger2:

My second question is will it heal back to normal or will it be like this forever?

Any clues anyone?

Could be a turf thing with another fish in the tank including the hippo.

Thanks...that's a relief! haha...well, I've read a lot of forums about the shyness of hippos, but this hippo is really active and always 1st in line during feeding. Anytime I come close to the tank, he's already dancing for food. That pig!

Thanks for the input. How long does it take to heal?

Depending on the rip it could take a couple of days or a week. It's very common to have rip fins and tails. They usually heal in time but some times they don't grow back completely or when they do grow back you can see that the fin had been torn before.

Hippo are usually shy in the LFS but once you get them into your tank that goes away and they're usually out a lot. Some can actually be aggressive specially over food and terriorty.

I call my Hippo a Speed Demon Vacuum. She/he zooms around like a madfish during the feedings, with its mouth open just inhaling all the food she can get her greedy fins on. Very amusing to watch. :splitspin

As far as damaged fins, my Marine Betta's tail frequently has patches missing. Not sure if someone's being an a*%hole in there (I never see any agression during the day and she's out and about all the time), or if she just gets it caught on the rocks. But the tears heal within a couple of days.

Fin on your tang will definitely heal....to keep things in line I always add some stress coat....

Question: is that tang eating, the stomach area looks as though it has caved in/shrunk and it looks a bit skinny.....

I ask this for a reason, if your tang just received a nip (the small injury of its fin), and you have fish that are territorial, check to make sure when you feed it is actually getting a chance to eat.

From MD post the fish are eating very well, the thin look in the stomach is probably from not getting the correct diet.

I give them a varied diet...livebrine shrimp, krill, Spectrum Optimum flakes, freeze dried brine shrimp, lettuce on clip, minced shrimp, Super Soft pellets, etc...

Is that ok?

I would stop feeding the livebrine shrimp, freeze dried brine shrimp and the minced shrimp and get some Formular II. Also feed Nori and if you feed Romaine lettuce freeze it first. As for the Flake try some Spriulina flake. You needto get more greens into it diet.

Why does the lettuce need to be freezed? Also, what are the cons for using live brine shrimp or freeze dried brine shrimp? I guess the LFS gave me wrong info when I bought them.

Brine has very little nutritional value unless they are freshly hatched and have the yolk sacks attached to them still
