For all of you reefers that dont know about this bacteria..it can be spread from fish to human...i think i unfortunately caught it...Just went to the doctor today and hes seems pretty confident that i have it...but regardless...you guys have to watch out when sitkcing your hands in the tank..we should really wear gloves..and for those who dont want to you really have to make sure you dont have any cuts on your hands or arms exposed to the water......i guess i was careless one too many times and now i have to pay for it..It has not been fun... i might even have to sell off my whole tank....Reef safely guys....

its not a fun matter noodus...the treatment isnt that bad...thats what i heard from my doctor...you just have to take stroonnn antibotics...but its a pain in the ass finding out what it is...i had 2 biopsys done the past 4 months...and another one 2 weeks ago....they all tested neg for this bacteria...but the infection/disease specialist explained to me that even though these tests came out neg it is still possible....its hard to culture it...But yeh ...at first its a hard bump on the skin....for me at least....then it turns soft....then it pusses up...and its an open wound and scars...and spreads....so yeh it reall f'in sucks

If you really believed and diagnosed with OPEN TB, you should not sell your tank and whatever inside without using antibotics. Please take all measures in stopping it and ask REAL experts in how to exterminate them before you sell your stuff away. Open TB is VERY contagious and hard to completely killed. 100 times worse than ich!!!!

Please detail your whole incident from the beginning you think there is a problem with your fish so that everyone here can have a better understand and early warning of it.

You'll be OK as long as you take the medics properly
Good luck.

nycfatcow, sorry to hear what's happened my best for a speedy recovery!!!

Jhale, could have done without the graphic pics in that link. But like a car crash, just could not help myself! :shocked1:

For a newbie like me, is there anyway to know if your tank (inhabitants) are sick? How many of you guys actually wear gloves when going into your tank? I only really know one (who will remain nameless) who says he doesn't .

How do we protect our livestock and ourselves!?

Wingo,
This is not Tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is totally different. Yes Mycobacterium marinum is part of the mycobacterium family in which tuberculois shares the same genus, but it is NOT in any way OPEN tuberculosis. Not even CLOSE to being tuberculosis. Two totally different things.
THere is no such thing as OPEN TB. THere is a milliary TB (systemically disseminated) and good ol pulmonary TB. Tuberculosis is a disease of the pulmonary system which has different characteristics all together. Trust me on this one...

Acutally, mycobacterium marinum is not very contagious to humans. Usually occurs in people who are immunocompromised in some way (cold, flu, on immunosuppressive drugs, etc) and by way of a
break in the skin. Hard to treat once you catch it because it is not your stardard organism. It's a mycobacterium which has different wall structure than most of your oridinary bacteria. Need debridement and special antibiotics to treat.

Best way to prevent it is to either wear gloves or to be very meticulous about washing your hands with soap and water each time you put your hands in the tank bare. Most noticable if you have a open cut that is just not healing over some time.

Just gotta be careful. This is a bug the Infectious Disease guys in medicine have known about for years. It is not new, but is very rare...
