Things to look for for tank pics:

White ballance. User setable is the best. Make sure your camera has it. Most cameras won't show colors like our eyes see it unless you can white ballance.

Macro. Just make sure your camera has macro. Nothing like NOT being able to take close-ups.

Rechargable Battery. I know, you can buy rechargable AA's. but you're adding $30-50 on the price of a camera for batteries and charger (if you go with lithium ion rechargables) decent cameras will come with a LI-ion battery.

Full Manual Mode. Be able to set shutter speeds/ aperature settings to get the pics you want. If you don't know how to use them, you'll soon learn what you can do!

My canon Elph is dying. I'm in the market to get a new cam too. I hate the fact that I know I'd use a DLSR to it's full potential. I just don't need to spend $1k on another camera.
