^^The thing is my mother in law and my wife's family is the ones preparing the food.

As you will notice, I am the brains and have some $$ to start the business while others will be my "supplier".
My family is known for cooking so we already have a nice customer base. Mother in-law's boyfriend is a "known" band player in the filipino community in the area so we do entertainment events as well. Also, a good market huge filipino community in bergen county but our food definitely crosses racial lines. My son's birthdays always gets raving reviews because of the food alone.

I actually plan to start that with our specialty BBQ ribs and shishkaBOOBs from my brother at the Meadowlands fairs on Saturdays! So I might be able to see you guys there. **This is a guarantee though.

If you are hell bent on owning a business, what you need to do is write a business plan for the business you may possibly be looking into. If it starts to make sense... Then follow through on items that you need to achieve that goal.

I think the food biz is going o be a huge undertaking and leave little to no time for much else. This industry works insane schedules. Good luck in whatever you decide, i feel like mind is made up a little.... Bergen county can use a good supplier and so can I. Make it work!

Thanks Thirty6. I'm sure I will be seeing you and Thirty5 very often! ha

**If it comes through.

SKene. are you filipino? based on your avatar it looks like it.

I've been sleeping on creating my business plan. I will have it done by end of February for the restaurant.

The plans for the reef hobby literally came up 2-3 hours before I made the thread. I was contemplating in my head to look further into it.

Don't quit your day job. This economy is going to crap. Despite the Dow and all the news, think about how many people you know who are still struggling and that is the norm which will get worse. The only way I would try and do a private business that is really a luxury is if the economy is doing well. Until jobs are created and not getting outsourced the economy won't get fixed.

Most of the stuff people are saying is pretty much right on the money. Starting ANY business in this economy SUCKS it will take all your time and money. If you have a steady job that you make decent money doing then don't F it up LOL People struggling to run a new business would kill for that opportunity. Restaurants especially man a lot of the time they are like night clubs they are hot 1 minute and not the next. Either way unless you have lots of family and friends to dedicate their lives to it it's extremely hard. You need people you trust because you are liable for everything that happens. Restaurant big or small needs a good amount of people to run it properly. You have to always be able to pass all the inspections make sure everything is super clean, fridges and freezers at the right temps at all times, make sure all the food is fresh. The second 1 person gets sick or you don't pass an inspection it always leads to worse things. Like Skene said write up a business plan get all your numbers crunched and go from there.

I'm not sure how much you know about getting a business plan together but basically this is a good start.
1) How much money and how many people you need to get it going
2) What you need to make in order to pay your employees, cover your rent and utilities, and be profitable.
3) proper licensing depending on what you are going to do. (Liquor license etc.)

Those are the top 3 and if those numbers don't seem feasible then I would get out before you get in too deep. A large # of restaurants are family businesses for a reason. You would HOPE your fam would have your back and not screw you although sometimes it doesn't work out that way. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do and I hope that helped put things into perspective a little bit.

A golden ticket?
IMO...In this economy, it would be more of a Golden Shower, than a golden ticket!

I'm sure there will be many people/family/friends that will encourage you to "go for it", "follow your dreams"...if you want to know their TRUE feelings...ask them to invest!
