she had live sand in her tank can i put it in my tank since i only have 20 lbs in a 40 gallon i know i need more sand for bio filter. what should i do put it in like that or wash it.

iwould just take a good portion of your tank water(like the amount you use to do water change) and rinse with that water before you put in your tank

how do i rinse it do i put in a strainer or jus poor it on top how do clean it

I agree with Dave. I'd just put the water from your tank into a bucket with the sand. Stir it up real good. Then strain the sand out into another bucket or right into your tank. Should be fine.
