...ok, since I am setting uP my (2) new tanks, i've been putting everything in hoLding tanks ? fish, rock, sand, etc... I doNt get this ...if I am putting everything in holding tanks, and those tanks are new, not established, wHere/whEn does this "cycling" occur? :scratchch

when I put everything in my new taNks, will it still cycle? or has it been cyCling in the holding tanks... :headache:

aLso, if i am just transferring from one tank to the oTher, i aM assuming that there is no cycLing invoLved... :afro:

i got my LR and LS shipped in water- there was so little dieoff there wasn't any cycling that i could tell (no ammonia spike, etc). If you are using the water from the holding tanks there shouldn't be any cycling at all- if you use new water you might notice a small cycle as the bacteria and stuff builds up in the water, but I wouldn't think that you would go through a 'typical' cycle unless there is still a lot of die off occuring. Use a good skimmer and have good flow in the tank and things should be fine!

I would also suggest using some (or all) of the holding tanks water (if the parameters are stable and where you want them) to help 'seed' the water in your new tanks. I used 5g of water from my FOSW tank for my 16g tank- don't know if it helped any, but I didn't have a cycle!

free floating bacteria are in very few numbers, most bacteria cling onto substrates which allows them to feed upon, there are few diffrent bacteria like nitrosoma etc.... that exist on the rocks, supposely if the rocks were to submerge into fresh new water 100 percent without any substrate, it causes a nice population die off in order to maintain species. the cycle should last between two day to repopulate, but stabilizing to your live stock bio load will cause it to spike up and down again, that's the reason you should unload the livestock slowly letting the population of bacteria to remburst.
