What's your reason...

...i know we all spend a ton of money on thiS hobby, but why? we aren't in it to make moNey, we caN't cruise in ouR reefs and get action... so why do you do it... :scratchch

for me, i simPly like looKing at all the life in it, all the colors and wonder how this water thing with saLt can make life happen so wonderfully...

It takes so much time, dedication and concentration that it keeps me out of trouble. It gets me into trouble with the wife though.

I went into it cause of my uncle. He always had tanks in Indonesia. This was in the 70's. People just had no way of keeping reefs back then. He just went out and scooped gallons of water from the ocean for waterchanges which was a daily thing. Lightling sucked back then so he could not really keep corals but the fish were just gorgeous!!

Then my dad got into it. Him being a German perfectionist nut made the reef work. I would just stare at his tanks for hours on end. I guess I just grew up with it.

Also being here in NYC, I miss the ocean.... That is my way of having a small part of my home in my livingroom.

Inky, I think you just put it in a nutshell, why all of us are into this hobby!

good question, hard to answer.

I like watching the coral grow, it's also kind of a zen type thing with me.
setting up the balance of the tank right takes a lot of time and patience.

I see it as an underwater garden, I always liked landscaping and growing plants, so this lets me have an outlet for that in the city.

Reason # 1 ,,we got into this cuz of some1 next to that had a tank that we liked .,,
Reason # 2 ,, we started with a small tank ,and from that we started are love ,
Reason # 3 ,,we got a bigger tank ,learned more about the hobby ,,the love got bigger ,
Reason # 4..Now(today) we have tanks that other ppl are tring to have ,and corlas that ppl just come in and say WOW,,that is a good feeling ,,,we are now in love ,,
Reason # 5 we know more about the hobby than all the LFS out there ..,,we are now brainyachs ,,,(fish nerds)
reason # 6 we now have a web site <<CALLED MANHATTAN REEFS ,,where ppl are cool ,nice ,friendly ,honest ,advice, and most of all ppl here wont walk out of your house with wet pockets :p ,,(sry had to throw that in ),LOL,,

But the truth ,,it keep me calm ,cool ,love to travel to see diff corals ,get good sales on thing ,the excitement ,the rush when you get a new coral,(waiting to see how it looks in your tank)look at your tank at nite with a small blue light to see the nite life ,talking to ppl that have no clue about the hobby ,(make you feel smarter then ppl<<LOL)..meeting new ppl ,and lots more ,,this hobby is great for lots of things ,,it will teach you and your family new educational thing and marine bio..marine life ,etc ,,,i can go on forever about why ,it just like everything else ,,you have to have the love for it ,I do ,and who ever is onthe site does as well

yeah, Deep, i agree... it's something inside us i gueSs that caN't be explained... just like the biLL that comes at the end of the month, you caNt expLain where all your money went to :headache: hey, at least we are calm about it....

I like it cuz its a challenging hobby where things are constantly changing- I get bored really easy once I've gotten good at something and it is really hard to get good at keeping a reef tank!

I also am kind of a science nerd (I could spend hours watching the national geo. channel and discovery channel...) and love keeping a little biotope in my bedroom.

some ppl ask me why do you spend so much on this hobby ,i always tell them ,,i love it ,,keep me away from spending money on crap ,,im learning a hell of alot ,,more then if i went to school for it ,i wouldnt have the patients to sit and listen to a teacher
But on MR you have cool ppl giving the right advice ,,Deanos with the links that helps out alots ,,slobby with his science degree...im a plumber ,,,jhale is akitchen designer ,BB is a comp wiz ,Tom take a hell of a pic ,, sypke is the doc ,,Doc is a Doctor ,,,,,,,YOu post a hell of alot ,,,and lot more ,,

Same here...and plus it keeps me of the drugs, that i could be doing.....thank god for the good reef
