Hi all:

I wanted to get some feedback on the placement of a 120 gallon tank I'm thinking of placing in my living room.

I live in an older home with a basement. The tank is going against a wall that is adjacent to a load bearing wall. However the tank would not be sitting perpendicular to the joists but parallel to the joists.

I think the best location is along the load bearing wall with the joists running the opposite or perpendicular direction to the tank.

If I place it in the location where the joists are running parallel to the tank do I have to shore up the joists with some reinforcement underneath?

Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Joists are 2x8 and spaced 18" apart and sit on girder

just support the tank from below on u should be fine. I'll suggest steel pole or one of those crank supports to keep the joists from bending under the weight, just becase wood may rot if ur basement gets water or moister.

a 120 is heavy mind u once its full. So even if ur floor can handle it w/o extra supports, add em, no reason not to be safe IMO

thats y i have my 150 in the basement :P

melt i'm in northern nj near paramus. 2x8 doesn't meet today's building code! I did a quick google and it looked like 2x8's were common with 2x10 where needed. Maximum span is 12' for 2x8 which is what it is in my house.

Melt you must live in a well built house. I have to find the link on tanks and floor support.
